How to Prepare for Seasonal Adventures

How to Prepare for Seasonal Adventures

By Jem Hanan, Contributing Blogger

Although the cold might make you think otherwise, the end of February is a great time to begin planning some spring and early summer hikes for when the weather begins to warm and the ice begins to thaw. For many kinds of hikes, spring is the best time to make the most out of the breathtaking sights, gorgeous weather, and seasonal flora. Avalanche also provides you with the gear you need to enjoy these hikes safely.

1. Desert Hike

For a hike that offers scenic desert landscapes and rock formations, look no further than the Superstition Mountains in Phoenix, Arizona. These mountains boast over 100 trails ranging from easy to difficult, so whether you’re a novice or a pro, there’s a path for you! Some highlights include the Hieroglyphic Trail, which features ancient petroglyphs created by Hohokam people, and the Siphon Draw Trail, a more challenging hike perfect for viewing the desert blooms.

Gear:

  • Lightweight, breathable clothing
  • Wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses
  • Sunscreen (SPF 30+)
  • Hydration bladder or water bottles
  • Electrolyte packets
  • Map or GPS device
  • Compact first-aid kit

2. Coastal Hike

For some hikes that feature coastal sights, the Acadia National Park in Maine has got you covered! Some trails are mellower, like the Ocean Path Trail, which follows the coastline, while others are more challenging, like the Precipice Trail that's a 1,000 foot vertical climb. While you're there, be sure to check out the Thunder Hole, an inlet where waves crashing against the rocky walls creates thunder-like echoes, and Otter Cliff, a part of the coastline with gorgeous pink granite rock formations.

Gear:

  • Waterproof hiking boots
  • Lightweight Rain Jacket
  • Moisture-wicking base layers
  • Binoculars
  • Quick-dry towel
  • Sunscreen and bug spray
  • Trekking poles (for uneven terrain)
  • Snacks with high salt content (for coastal humidity)

3. Wildflower Hike

To make the most of the wildflowers in bloom throughout the season, Mount Rainier in Washington is a must-visit. The mountain and its surrounding fields are renowned for their vibrant and lush wildflower growth. For the best views of the wildflowers, the Skyline Trail Loop and Naches Peak Loop Trail are the trails to hike. Some other amazing sights include the Emmons Glacier which you can see from the Glacier Basin Trail and, for more experienced climbers, Camp Muir at the top of the challenging (and aptly named) Camp Muir Trail.

Gear:

  • Camera or smartphone for photography
  • Layers (mornings can be chilly)
  • Sun hat or cap
  • Trail Map or Guidebook
  • Reusable Snack Bags
  • Lightweight, Collapsible Hiking Poles
  • Waterproof Trail Shoes

4. Forest Hike

Aside from its spectacular trees the Redwood National Park in California also offers amazing family-friendly hikes. The Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail is a great introduction to the park, with signs marking the forest’s ecology and historical significance. For a shot beneath the iconic redwood tree tunnel, take the Prairie Creek and Foothill Loop Trail. If you’re craving something a bit more difficult (and all the more rewarding), reserve a permit to access the Tall Trees Grove Trail which features some of the tallest trees in the forest and the world!

Gear:

  • Mosquito repellent
  • Breathable long-sleeve shirt and pants (protection from ticks)
  • Compact rain poncho
  • Trail map and compass
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Lightweight daypack

Whether you're drawn to the desert landscapes of Arizona, the coastal beauty of Maine, the wildflower-filled meadows of Washington, or the towering redwoods of California, there's a trail waiting for you. With the right gear and preparation, you can make the most of these breathtaking hikes and experience the season at its best. So start mapping out your next trek, and get ready to hit the trails when the warmer days arrive!
